Taking a lead in developing an institutional sustainability leadership, the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Community Higher Education programme is intended to empower university leadership through community engagement in collaboration with ASEAN universities. It aims to provide a platform for university leaders to discuss issues of higher education in adopting SDG Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework in the ASEAN region. The programme will be conducted through a fundamental sort class on sustainability, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), system thinking in an experiential learning, on issue-based approach, Sustainability Science and community-based approach projects as to allow an interdisciplinary approach towards developing a sustainable ASEAN Community. 

The overall program consists of :

  1. Series of lectures on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sustainability Science, Social-Ecological System and Forum Subak 1 & 2;
  2. Workshop on Sustainability Science & Assessment for trans and interdisciplinary research;
  3. Community engagement and translational research on the application of Sustainability Science in the case of Subak as a traditional water irrigation system which linking the water temple network and rice terrace as the cultural landscape of the Bali Province WHS of UNESCO;
  4. Localize SDGs for World Heritage Site (WHS) Bali province Cultural Landscape.

Objectives of the program

  • To expose the HEIs leader on the complexities of preserving the cultural landscape of Bali province vis-à-vis the fast-growing economic development pressure; 
  • To train the Sustainability Science and Assessment by using the complexity of the cultural landscape of WHS in Bali Province.; 
  • To showcase the adaptive and transformational leadership skills at the local level through ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) approach; 
  • To take stock and translate the specific Goals and Target of SDGs for WHS Bali Province.

The output of the program

  1. Sustainability Framework for a cultural landscape of UNESCO WHS in Bali Province, Indonesia;
  2. Plausible pathway in translating the SDGs - Goals and Target for the cultural landscape of UNESCO WHS in Bali Province ; 
  3. A full report of collaboration transformational research between UTM SDSN Chapter, UNESCO Jakarta Office, Centre for Sustainable Development, Universitas  Udayana, Universitas Mahasaraswati, SDSN Indonesia Chapter & Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia.
